RocketLit’s annotation features are designed to help students actively engage with text and develop deeper comprehension skills. This guide walks you through how to review, grade, and leave feedback on student annotations—and how students can view your feedback in return.

What This Help Article Covers:

📝 What Annotation Tools Students Can Use

Students can choose from five different annotation tools to interact with RocketLit articles:

  • Highlight (Green or Red)

  • Underline

  • Circle

  • Bracket

  • Sticky Note

Each annotation tool includes a side notepad, where students can type thoughts, evidence, or reflections tied to their markings. These tools scaffold deeper thinking and help students process information as they read.

✏️ How to Review Student Annotations

Helping students develop annotation habits is a great way to strengthen their literacy skills. Once students submit their annotations, you can review them using the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the “Grading” tab and select “Annotations”.

  2. Click on the article you'd like to review.

  3. You have three options to view annotations:

    • Preview All Annotations – See every student’s annotations at a glance.

    • Filter by Annotation Type – Click on a specific tool (e.g., green highlight, circle, underline) to view annotations made with that method.

    • View Individual Annotations – Click "View # annotations" next to a student’s name to see their full set of annotations.

      • 📍 Pro Tip: Use the blue circle icon in the top-right corner to skip directly to the next annotation within the article.

✅ How to Grade and Leave Feedback

Once you’ve opened a student’s annotations, you'll find simple tools to grade and leave comments:

Grading Options:

  • ➕ Plus – Exceeds expectations

  • ✔️ Check – Meets expectations

  • ➖ Minus – Needs improvement

  • 💬 Add Feedback – Write personalized feedback to support the student’s reading and annotation habits.

⚠️ Don’t forget to click "Save" after entering a grade or comment!

👀 How Students View Annotation Feedback

Students can view your annotation grades and feedback by:

  1. Navigating to the “Scores” tab in their RocketLit account

  2. Clicking “View Annotations” next to the relevant assignment
